Why Buy and Sell by Public Auction?

Auctions are a fast and cost effective method to turn surplus merchandise, assets and belongings into cash.

Auctions are recognised by the world’s largest companies as an accepted method of sale and purchase of their assets.

Auctions conducted by a well established firm can generate and expose merchandise to many potential bidders and buyers, thus establishing a current market value for merchandise as they are sold in open, to allow public competition.

Auctions can quickly reduce interest and overhead costs, as all items are sold for immediate payment, and in most cases accounts are paid out to the vendors within five working days.

Auctions produce a wealth of interesting items and more and more people are discovering that they are a good source of furnishing and acquiring merchandise at less than retail cost.

Auctions are a green and eco friendly way of recycling merchandise to other users. However please be aware that many items are unsaleable due to current trading standard laws and public demand.

Buying at Public Auction

How do I find out about auctions? All our auctions will appear on the web site, we also advertise in the Hull Daily Mail on a Tuesday Evening, Yorkshire Post on a Saturday morning and also other auction publications. We produce an auction catalogue for all of our auctions prior to the sale, which you can down load via the web site or if you wish we can send you a copy via fax or the post. If you wish to be put on our emailing list please contact us.

Viewing and Previews. We always recommend that you view the auctions prior to the sale, mark your catalogue or make a list of the items you are interested in so you are fully prepared for the auction start.

I’ve seen something I would like, what next? Before you bid, you must register this is a simply process of filling a form in, producing some identification e.g. a photo driving license and leaving a fully refundable deposit. Our office will issue you with a buyer’s number, use this number to bid; the auctioneer will make a note of the number and the hammer price when you have the successful bid.

How do I bid? Check the timing of the sale. Most of our sales last for several hours. Take a guide from our staff about when your lot number may come under the hammer (up for sale) but remember this is only a guide, so leave yourself some extra time.

If you are completely new to auctions, ensure you listen to other lots being sold so that you can get used to the bidding process.

During the sale our auctioneer will call out the lot number of the item being sold and the bidding will usually start somewhere below the lower estimate. Our clients have many different ways of signaling a bid, some of which are more eccentric than others! The easy way is to clearly raise the board that you will be given with your buyer’s number on it but waving or nodding is fine for those who are slightly more confident. Don’t worry about the possibility of accidentally having a bid taken when it wasn’t intended, our auctioneers are very experienced and as well as the normal signal our auctioneers are looking for eye contact.

In a busy auction room and particularly where the bids are progressing quickly, make sure your gestures are confident enough to attract the auctioneer’s attention. If the auctioneer is busy with two bidders, don’t worry, as soon as one of those two bidders’ drops out he will look round the room to check for other interested parties. If the bidding is still below your limit this will be your chance!

What can I do if I can’t get to the auction? We always recommend that you try and make it to the sale but if unfortunately you can’t, or you cannot get someone to come on your behalf, don’t worry. You can leave a commission bid, just ask for a “Bidding Form” when you’re viewing, fill out the top with your details and make a list of the lot number, description and the MAXIMUM amount you wish to pay for the item/s. this amount will not include the VAT (Value Added Tax 17.5%) if applicable or Buyers Premium (this is a commission added to the hammer price 10% plus VAT) and the Auctioneer will bid on your behalf. You may also bid via the telephone, one of the saleroom porter (member of our staff who works in the saleroom) will call you shortly before the lots is due to be sold, when the lot is under offer you will bid via the porter who will relay the bid to the auctioneer.

Value Added Tax If the Vendor(the person/s or company) who are selling the item are VAT registered and the VAT has been reclaimed on the item, then VAT will be payable on the hammer price. VAT is payable on our commissions and fees.

When can I collect my goods? Collection of goods you have bought, in most cases you make take the goods as soon as you have settled your account in full, but please note that in some cases we like to wait till the auction has completed before goods can be collected. All goods must be removed from the auction site by 12 noon the following working day, unless prior arrangements are made with the auctioneer.

Selling by Public Auction

It’s a simple process whether it’s a single item, a full house clearance or an entire engineering plant, contact our office to inform us that you wish to sell or have a valuation done on an item or items. It is always best to make an appointment before arriving therefore we can have someone on hand to advise and help you if necessary. If you would like us to visit you at another location this can also be arranged. We can discuss a value of the goods and what we feel they should make by public auction; we can also advise whether we feel it would be worth holding the good for the appropriate auction.

I have decided to sell my items what’s next? Bring the items to the saleroom, you will be asked to complete an “Entry Form” which includes, the vendors (person/s selling the goods) details and the quantity, description and reserve (the minimum amount you will except for the item) if any. You will then receive a “Vendors Code” you must mark all items with the code so we can identify the owner when lotting the goods for the auction. The goods will then be aligned for the auction, lotted, viewed by potential bidders and sold by public auction on sale day.

When will I get my money? In most cases your sale account less commission and any other pre-sale expenses i.e. specialist advertising, should be ready within five working days subject to items selling. This may be posted or collected.

What happens if my goods don’t sell? If unfortunately item's don’t sell then we will enter it/them into our next auction, if still remains unsold then the item's must be collected.
